More than 160 years ago, thousands of Americans answered the call to preserve the Union. They marched into battle, served aboard warships, endured hardship and sacrifice, and helped determine the future of the United States. Today, you have the opportunity to make sure their stories are never forgotten.
When you join the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW), you become part of a national fraternity of more than 6,000 men dedicated to preserving the memory and legacy of the Union veterans who saved the nation. But membership isn't simply about looking backward.
It's about discovering where you came from, making new friends, serving your community, and ensuring that the sacrifices of your ancestors — and the principles for which they fought — continue to be remembered.
Start Your Journey
You may already know the name of your Civil War ancestor—or perhaps you only have a family story passed down through the generations. Either way, your journey starts here! Our members can help you investigate your family's Civil War connection and determine your eligibility for membership.
If you are interested in joining, the best place to begin is with your local Camp. Connecting directly with a Camp can greatly accelerate the application process. The Department of Texas and Louisiana currently has five Camps serving members throughout Texas and Louisiana. Visit our Department 'Camps' page to locate the Camp nearest you. The Camp Junior Vice-Commander will be happy to help confirm your eligibility, answer your questions, and guide you through the membership process.
