Eagle Scout Program
One of the many goals of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is to recognize those who achieve the status of Eagle Scout. These outstanding achievers are presented with a special congratulatory letter and color Certificate of Commendation, suitable for framing. While we encourage any Scout searching for that special community service project to look to us for inspiration on projects relating to the Civil War, we offer this certificate with no “strings attached” - other than they must be an Eagle Scout.
Every Eagle Scout Court of Honor observes a very proud tradition that our organization is pleased to recognize in memory of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.). Comprised of over 400,000 Union Veterans of the Civil War (1861-1865), the G.A.R. was a living symbol of patriotism when the Boy Scouts of America was formed in 1910.
Before the passing of their last member on August 2, 1956, the G.A.R. officially recognized the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) as their Legal Heir. As such, it is our honor to maintain the many traditions of the G.A.R. These include the promotion of good citizenship by teaching patriotism, civic duties, and the love and honor of our flag – concepts that are "near and dear" to the Scouts of America.
When possible, every effort is made by a local Camp member, often wearing the uniform of our Order or a reproduction Civil War uniform, to attend the Eagle Scout Court of Honor to personally present the certificate to the outstanding Scout.

JROTC/ROTC Award Program
The Department of Texas and Louisiana, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) also proudly supports the development of America’s future leaders through its JROTC/ROTC Award Program. This meaningful initiative recognizes exceptional cadets whose achievements reflect the enduring values of leadership, scholarship, character, and patriotism.
Awards are presented to deserving cadets participating in Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC), National Defense Cadet Corps (NDCC), college ROTC, Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, and Young Marines programs. Recipients are selected for their outstanding academic performance, demonstrated leadership, and strong commitment to country. Each honoree receives an official SUVCW certificate and a service ribbon - tangible reminders of achievement and the importance of service to others and the nation.
The local SUVCW Camps of the Department help make this program especially meaningful by coordinating with nearby military and cadet units and presenting awards in person at annual ceremonies. Units or sponsoring Camps generally submit the required application, at least 30 days before the presentation. Through this program, the SUVCW honors today’s outstanding cadets while encouraging the qualities that strengthen our nation. By recognizing young men and women who lead, achieve, and serve, the SUVCW helps inspire the next generation of patriotic American leaders.
